SNORING PREVENTION

Snoring occurs when air flow is obstructed while you are sleeping. The sound comes when the surrounding soft tissues of the nose, the soft palate, or the pharynx vibrate.

REASONS FOR SNORING:

  • Allergies
  • Sinus Infection
  • Deformities in the nose like deviated septum
  • Polyps
  • Having a high BMI (body mass index)
  • Genetics including enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  • A long soft palate
  • Long uvulae
  • Sleep apnea

VARIOUS HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH SNORING:

The various health risks associated with snoring include things like obstructive sleep apnea, which creates major problems that include:

  • Long interruptions of breathing
  • Waking frequently from sleep
  • Light sleeping

Prolonged suffering from obstructive sleep apnea results in higher blood pressure and can cause enlargement of the heart, which elevates the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

A poor night’s sleep will lead to fatigue and drowsiness during the day. Snoring can also lead to low oxygen levels in the blood, constricted blood vessels in the lungs, and possibly, eventually pulmonary hypertension and chronic headaches.

Lifestyle changes can help prevent snoring. Elevating your head slightly and not sleeping on your back, losing weight, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, and avoiding alcohol can help prevent snoring.

If all efforts to stop snoring do not help, consult your dentist for other solutions.
