A crown is an artificial restoration of a tooth-shaped dental “cap that fits over a damaged tooth or to cover an implant. It is cemented into place to cover the tooth and it fully encases the visible portion that lies above the gum line. It restorea the tooth to its original state.  This makes it strong and gives it the shape of a natural permanent tooth.

There are many different options for what kind of crown to receive, and we make recommendations based on your personal situation.

Dental crowns are recommended for the following situations:

  • Replacing a tooth that is fractured, chipped, broken or otherwise damaged
  • A cavity that is just too large to be filled
  • Bridge attachments
  • To cover a large filling when there is no tooth remaining
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To recover a poorly shaped tooth or a discolored tooth
  • To cover teeth that have had a root canal treatment.

Types of dental crowns

Porcelain (all-ceramic): These dental crowns are made with porcelain or dental ceramic. These materials are known for their appearances, beauty and structure.

ll-metal (gold): The dental metal crowns are made using gold or “white” (silver-colored) dental alloy. This metal is best known for their strength and excellent durability.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): A hybrid dental crown can be referred as full-cast crowns that have porcelain fused onto metal alloy.

Dr. Alter uses these steps for making a crown:

  • Proper tooth preparation
  • Taking the dental impression
  • Placing a temporary dental crown
  • Cementing the permanent crown

With proper oral health dental crowns and can last for a life time. Brushing and flossing twice a day is the best method of keeping your teeth healthy and shiny. Regular checkups with Alter Smiles is another key to maintaining good oral hygiene for your dental crown to last as long as possible.

A bridge is a custom-made replacement tooth that fills the space where one or more teeth are missing.  Dental bridges literally bridge the gap made by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap.  These two or more anchoring teeth are called abutment teeth and have a false tooth or teeth in between. The false teeth are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials.  Dental bridges can be supported by natural teeth or implants.

Many people do not realize that having a missing tooth or missing teeth can affect someone in so many ways.  A dental bridge will help:

  • Restore your smile
  • Restore your ability to chew
  • Restore your speech and pronunciation
  • Maintain your face’s shape
